Welcome to another episode of Warbird Wednesday! Today we are diving into our attack helicopters segment starting with the Mil Mi-4, known as the “Hound” by NATO, a Soviet-designed attack helicopter first flown in 1952 and introduced in 1953. The Mi-4 was a significant production model, built from 1951 to 1979, with around 4,000 units manufactured, featuring a jettison-able rotor for safety. Despite being widely used in Soviet aviation and by the Indian military for heavy lifting, it wasn’t particularly effective as an attack helicopter due to its lack of armor and vulnerability to enemy fire. While largely phased out by the 1970s, North Korea continues to use Mi-4 helicopters, representing a piece of Cold War-era aviation history.
